How to change the world,” The Space City Ski Club World! “Don’t just sit there, MAKE A DIFFERENCE!”
These were headlines in the Houston Chronicle, 1/1/07, Section E, based on John Mayer’s Waiting on the World to Change. So what would you change? CHANGE in 2007 will be my mission to carry out for Space City Ski Club. Now you are wondering why is Ellen writing this article? Change is for me and Space City Ski Club. I volunteered to complete Gary Ladd’s term as President. He too has a change, one that was job-related and he could not continue his dedication as he felt was needed to serve the club. We all thrive with change so I would like to stimulate ideas from members for my short term, the first 4 months in 2007.
Picture your ideal ski trip. Where is the destination you dream to go? Save that image. Now, visualize one of your fondest ski trip memories. The destination and ski friends you met are forever engraved in your memory. Send Pat Piech, VP-Trips, ppiech48@ho uston.rr.com and me eeastham@prodi gy.net these ideas you just thought of for a dream ski trip or a memorable destination. Your input will help the club plan future trips. Ski trips are the heartbeat of the club! However, I served as VP-Programs and recognize for most members, there are 51 weeks you do not ski. Some are fortunate members who sign up for multiple trips, such as Keith Kirkman, Roger Holzman, and a few select others. Innovative activities and unique monthly meetings in Houston are the main social source of gatherings for current and new members to discover the benefits of belonging to a ski club, whose members don’t just ski! Think for a moment of your past “non-ski trip” experiences with the ski club or other clubs you belong to. You have the ideas and can MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Share these ideas by sending to Deb Cini, VP-Programs, dcini@victoria.com and me eeastham@prodi gy.net.
My first task as President was assembling a Nominating Committee. Loyal members volunteered their time and efforts to select a slate of officers for 2007/2008. We are looking for good men and women to lead the club! If you would like to become part of Space City’s future and MAKE A DIFFERENCE, contact the committee members (see separate article). I would like to recognize and thank the members of the committee: Deborah Christie, Chairman, Gary Barrett, Roger Holzman, Sue Salvage, Leona, Schroeder, Louella Steller, and Marti Turner.
The current officers are dedicated and planning a memorable year. Volunteer efforts are how this club continues to exist, so take a step forward and let us know how you would like to help! Attend activities, meetings, and happy hours, which are the best way to reward the volunteers who plan events. I am looking forward to change and excitement in 2007. I find it exhilarating knowing that we together can MAKE A DIFFERENCE for the future of Space City Ski Club. Won’t you join me?

| Space City Ski Club: 2007-08 nominations for officers | |
The Nominating Committee is searching for the best and brightest among the SCSC Membership to guide us through the 2007-2008 year, and needs your recommendations for next years leaders.
If you have worked with another volunteer that would make a great officer – please send us your recommendation! This includes YOU! As a volunteer club, SCSC needs an energetic team of officers to lead the day-to-day aspects of the club, as well as, influence the club’s direction for the future.

- VP-Programs: Coordinates all club meeting programs and Non-Ski activities

- Secretary: Records official business of the club
- Treasurer: Performs the financial and accounting functions of the club (basic accounting and computer skills recommended)

- Am I self-motivated?
- Am I enthusiastic about the club and the office?
- Do I have the ability to coordinate others toward a common goal?
- Do I have any experience I can offer?
- Am I willing (and able) to serve a two year commitment (1st year as Officer, 2nd on Board of Directors)?
- Am I willing to devote the needed time (can be 20+ hrs/month) as an officer?
- If you can answer yes – the nominating committee would like to hear from you!
- Please contact anyone on the committee for additional information or an application.

Racing News - Bob Wray
TSC Fall Roundup – Breckenridge, CO
A team of 15 Space City racers, led by race director Craig Campbell, competed in the Texas Ski Council Cup Race during the Thanksgiving trip to Breckenridge. Although the team finished third with a total of 544 earned points, that’s 221 points more than we scored at Fall Roundup last year. Austin Skiers were first, Lone Star was second and Los Amigos finished fourth among the Division I large club teams. Bob Wray had our fastest time on the yellow course of 24.49 to lead the SCSC men and Ellen Eastham led the women with a best time of 27.68, also on the yellow course. Marti Turner and Sharon Simandl finished second and third for the women, while Nelson Turner and Bill Bomberger came in second and third for the men. Bob received a gold Nastar medal for his run, Ellen, Marti, Sharon and Nelson earned silver medals, and first time racer Ann Ivory was awarded a bronze medal. Bill, Jose Araujo, Jerry Montgomery and Tor Lileng also received bronze Nastar medals for their runs.
Our racers must have just been warming up because later on they made an excellent showing in the Individual Races. Marti earned a spot on the podium with third overall in her class, and received another silver medal. Bob and Nelson both earned gold medals and placed fourth and fifth overall in their class. Ann topped her morning performance by earning a silver medal this time, while Craig and Jose received bronze medals for their runs.
Although they didn’t receive Nastar awards (this time), the following racers received Space City medals. Anne and Jennifer were first time Snowboard racers and kids with Ellen Eastham.
Black – Chuck Pena
Blue – Anne Muething, Sean O’Brien
Green – Jennifer Bush |
