GOAL : A simple four-letter word, yet such a powerful one! We all have goals, personal, business, family, and ski club goals. We set them and determine what it takes to meet our goals to succeed! My family recently set a goal…to win the snowman contest at the Pearland Winterfest. We have won two trophies in the past, so the stakes were high. We drew our plan, assembled accessories, had plenty of determination, then we did it; First Place, Best Costume for “Mardi Gras Monica”. Sounds amateur? It was a family teambuilding experience and a goal we achieved together.
A ski trip is a special team-building experience. When you sign up for a trip, you wonder who you will meet, will the skiing be good, and what type of memories will result after the trip is over? Each Trip or Activity Coordinator begins with setting a goal of having one of the best trips/activities possible. The goal is fulfilled after the trip returns or the activity is complete.
What a winter it has been in Western U.S.! Skiers with Space City have departed Houston destined for resorts across the West to include TSC Breckenridge Fall Roundup over Thanksgiving, Vail in December, Park City for the huge TSC Traditional, mid-January to Heavenly Valley, CA and early Feb. to Crested Butte. TSC’s Winter Expedition went to Neustift, Austria the end of January, 36 out of 96 from Space City. Snow reports have been phenomenal and great times had by all! What else could you expect from a Space City ski trip? There are 2 remaining ski trips to enjoy the camaraderie this season!
The nomination committee has been busy filling 7 officer positions. At the time of this article, all the positions had not been filled. The announcement of the slate of officers will come by electronic notice to your e-mail box, prior to the February 12 meeting. So…. stay tuned!
Be sure to attend the activities coming up: February 17 Mardi Gras-Galveston with the Downhill Krewe, sign up for the wine tasting April 21 at Dawn Rodriguez’s home, Craig Campbell has arranged a really great trip to Las Vegas, and Thuy Tran is waiting for you to sign up for Thailand on TSC’s Summer Expedition. Summer activities need to be planned now. It is not too early to think about what the ski club should do. Volunteer to be an AC or give suggestions to Deb Cini dcini@victoria.com. Participation in these activities, upcoming meetings and happy hours is how you can be part of the “special team-building” experience of the Space City Ski Club. We are a team, you know, a powerful one full of members that bring a variety of skills, ideas, and special friendships. |

| Breckenridge Thanksgiving Trip | By TC Patricia Finch, ATC Lauri Raykind |
|
We were all apprehensive regarding skiing conditions, but I think everyone found enough snow and plenty of runs to keep them busy. We had a total of 39 participants who enjoyed the beautiful warm weather. In fact, I thought I was Spring skiing. Our condos were conveniently located next to the Quicksilver lift and the Village TSC activities. We were one block from Main street with all of the shops.
We arrived very late on Tuesday night, but everyone was anxious the next morning to hit the slopes and Youth amp. We had 7 participants in Youth Camp. The repeats from last year were Xena Murugappan, Jenny and Luke Huebner, Daniel and Alexander Duenas. Kristina Ritter and Hailey Ravkind were new skiers this year in Youth Camp. The TSC made a conscious effort for the children to have a good time and to be included in all of the activities. In fact, the 18 and under group had a pizza party with putt putt golf and cookie decorating on Friday night at Beaver Run, allowing the adults an opportunity to have dinner alone. I understand last year there were only 32 children in Youth Camp but this year there were 61 youth participating.
Bill Bomberger played Mr. Mom on this trip. He was courageous enough to bring his 2 nieces as a gift to them. Because of his love of skiing, he wanted to share the experience with them. He was up each morning making sure they had breakfast and were ready to ski. The only problem was Kathy had a preexisting injury that was aggravated by the ski boot. So, for the remainder to the trip, Kathy Lindley was on crutches. Lauren lost her wallet. Bill thought that it would not be found and, of course, her money was gone. Well, when Bill got home the girls called to say a 5 year boy from Granbury, Texas who had been in ski school found the wallet (money) and gave it to his parents. His parents returned the wallet (money) to Lauren. I am proud that we have parents/child who were honest and kind enough to make sure Lauren’s wallet was returned. Sharon Simandl and Craig Campbell were also courageous enough to room with Bill and the girls.
Most of the trip consisted of repeats from last year. We had Sam Cornelius, Sandra Cornelius, Lee Joe and Luz Marquez in one condo who skied together last year and wanted to do it again. Ann Ivory joined them in their condo. She was our newcomer for the ski club and for our Thanksgiving trip. She also had to be initiated in the ski club by skiing with Tor Leling. I believe everyone should have that adventure at least once. She can hold her own with Tor. She also skied with Bob Wray, and Chuck Pena. On the last day Bill Bomberger took her to the Imperial Bowl.
Marti and Nelson Turner drove to Breckenridge to join us and enjoyed skiing the entire week. They also skied Vail, Keystone and Loveland during the week. Anabel Duenas was a good sport for her husband Art and boys Daniel and Alexander. She took lessons 2 days and then skied with her family.
Jose Araujo went skiing with Holly Luong. Jose wanted to stop for pictures, but Holly is one of those skiers who doesn’t stop, so Jose took is own pictures and tried to keep up with Holly. Holly was also a newcomer to the Thanksgiving trip.
Laurie Ravkind brought her two daughters for their first experience at skiing. Hailey being the younger and more dare devil wanted to ski black runs by the second day. Suzanne was also a good skier but more cautious. They both were skiing blues by the end of the trip.
We had a very nice Thanksgiving Dinner at the Village at Breckenridge which was in the adjoining building. On Friday night, for those who did not go out to dinner, we had a chili supper in our condo. Sean O’Brien, Bob Wray, Tor Lileng and Chuck Pena participated along with my condo mates. Most everyone elected to go out because the kids had their party at Beaver Run. Sean O’Brien, TSC officer, was busy learning his job so that he can run the Crested Butte TSC trip smoothly.
John Zavala and Laura Ritter were also repeat Thanksgiving skiers. They roomed with Kathy Huebner and her two children Luke and Jenny. Jenny Huebner and Xena Murugappan became ski friends. I would see them quite frequently conversing about what they had been doing for the day. I don’t know if Basker Murugappan was able to keep up with Xena. I’m doubtful.
Ellen Eastham and her family were our shadows. She drove with 4 children and arrived on Wednesday. I understand Jennifer, Jessica and Mackenzie Bush and Anne Muething managed to get in at least 2 days of skiing, Friday and Saturday.
A special thanks to Craig Campbell again this year for being our Race Director. He took control and everything was handled efficiently. The Club took third place in the club standing. |

| Racing News -TSC Fall Roundup – Breckenridge, CO | By Bob Wray, Race Director |
A team of 15 Space City racers, led by race director Craig Campbell, competed in the Texas Ski Council Cup Race during the Thanksgiving trip to Breckenridge. Although the team finished third with a total of 544 earned points, that’s 221 points more than we scored at Fall Roundup last year. Austin Skiers were first, Lone Star was second and Los Amigos finished fourth among the Division I large club teams. Bob Wray had our fastest time on the yellow course of 24.49 to lead the SCSC men and Ellen Eastham led the women with a best time of 27.68, also on the yellow course. Marti Turner and Sharon Simandl finished second and third for the women, while Nelson Turner and Bill Bomberger came in second and third for the men. Bob received a gold Nastar medal for his run, Ellen, Marti, Sharon and Nelson earned silver medals, and first time racer Ann Ivory was awarded a bronze medal. Bill, Jose Araujo, Jerry Montgomery and Tor Lileng also received bronze Nastar medals for their runs. Our racers must have just been warming up because later on they made an excellent showing in the Individual Races. Marti earned a spot on the podium with third overall in her class, and received another silver medal. Bob and Nelson both earned gold medals and placed fourth and fifth overall in their class. Ann topped her morning performance by earning a silver medal this time, while Craig and Jose received bronze medals for their runs.
Although they didn’t receive Nastar awards (this time), the following racers received Space City medals:

WOW! What another GREAT week of skiing, snowboarding and FUN in Vail.
Seventy-two SCSC members went to Vail, Colorado on Saturday, December 2, 2007 for a wonderful week of skiing where we joined our shadows, Maureen Irwin, George Lopez and Dennis Newell We had wonderful weather, not too cold, beautiful blue skies. Effie Rubenstein (from Sportours) joined us at the airport and skied with us for three days. She was so helpful to us. We had six first time ever skiers with us, Mandie Sanchez, Lora Gaige, Lesley Fagg, Nancy Ibarrra, Barbara Brown and Pam Wright. They took skiing lessons and snow boarding lessons and are now looking forward to their next ski destination. There was one condo with eight women, Anne Marchetti, Barbara Della Longa, Kim Olinger, Gloria Lopez, Camille La- Roe, Teri Welsh, Pam Wright and Leyla Ozkardesh (they called themselves Snow Chicks Space City and even had T-Shirts made to honor the club). All the single guys wanted to be in that condo. After everyone got settled into their condos and rented their skis/boots the next thing was to look for a place for dinner. Most everyone went to Montauks, which was right outside our back door. Spotted there was Carmen Mikhail, Elizabeth Barker, Chuck Ratliff, Martin Bradley, Tor Lileng, Yvonne McMahon, Roger Holzman, Ron Hayes, Judy Schiro, Mary Jo and Tony Loverdi, Buzz Allen and Effie Rubenstein.
Sunday, no one wanted to waste any time getting on the slopes. The weather was cool and the sky sunny and blue. We all met for lunch on the mountain and began planning on where we would all ski and meet. Stan Smith was our first injury. Someone skied over the back of his skis knocking him down which resulted in a fractured collar bone.
Our Welcome Party, sponsored by Sportours, was a big hit. Everyone had a chance to meet and get to know the other participants.
Monday and Tuesday’s skiing was beautiful. Our skiers were Randy Kratz, Rita Cardenas, Leyla Ozkardesh, Ellen and Frank Donnelly, Tom and Chaille Hutcheson, Brenda Herman, Barry Caspar, Andy Brown, Ash Moza, Nancy DuFrane, Bob Wray, Larry Edmondson, Dennis Pechal, Cheryl Crockett, Bob Olsen, Frank Adams, Jim and Julie Moncur, Andy and Leslie Cashio, Keith Kirkman, Bob DeBell, Tom Huzzey, James Parise, Jim Edwards, Melinda Hughes, Pat Piech, Jim Walker, Gary Rollins, Buddy Soland, Joe Nerwich (from the Lone Star Ski Club), Laurent Muller, Seng Teo, Trish Ramirez, Sheldon Tuffyas, Ted Widmer, Cindy Moore, Gaynell Blase (from New York City!), Tom Kaptain and Vernon McGaw.
Non-Skiers, Gloria Lopez (recuperating from knee surgery) and Clara Tuffyas showed their expertise in the shopping area. I understand that they earned a “double black” pin for their efforts.
Tuesday evening was our club dinner held at Blu’s in Vail Village. We took time afterwards for photos.
Wednesday, the short trip people left. Some of them skied the half day and then caught the bus for the trip back. There were a lot of contented smiles on the bus ride back to Denver. Good memories.
On Wednesday evening our second injury occurred. The story is that Dale Allbritton was in the shower and Martin Bradley was chasing Alice Allbritton around the condo when she jammed her little toe into the fireplace hearth resulting in a fractured toe. That’s their story and they’re sticking to it!
Thursday and Friday were both beautiful days on the slopes. Friday evening everyone met in Judy Schiro/Ron Hayes/Roger Holzman/Tom Huzzey’s condo and enjoyed leftovers and friendship. Buddy Soland’s grandson joined us for the evening.
On Saturday morning a very tired but happy group climbed aboard the bus for our ride to Denver and our flight home.
I want to thank all of the participants on this trip. They made my job so easy. I hope to see you again next year! Good night Randy, don’t let the bed bugs bite! |
| PROGRAM AND ACTIVITIES | By Deb Cini, VP of Programs |

Hi Everyone! This season has been a blast, not only from a skiing standpoint, but will all of the fun activities we have planned monthly! Our Bike and Blade Event, Laser Tag Night, Holiday Gala, Rice Tail Gate Party and the recent Wine Tasting Event were all a big success, with many new members joining as a result. The new year will be equally as entertaining, so don't miss our upcoming social events and happy hours! These events are a great way to introduce your friends and co-workers to the Ski Club and to get to know other members better. And don't forget our monthly meetings (see schedule) at fabulous Vargo's, which have become a social event in themselves! |
| FROM THE SKI DESK | By Pat Piech, VP of Trips |
Well winter is in full swing and so is our ski season. We have had 5 trips depart so far… that is over 300 skiers that have hit the slopes with Space City Ski Club. Right now, Crested Butte is getting ready to leave as is Sun Valley on February 24 and Jackson Hole on March 10 th. These trips are sold out but we always seem to get last minute cancellations. So contact Llona Doubet, Marsha Lutz or Leyla Ozkardesh if you are interested and they can tell you if any spots have opened up.
So far, we have had great feedback on all of the trips run this season. I want to extend a special thank you to our trip leaders who have worked so hard in organizing all of the details that make them run so smoothly. Next time you see any of these people, please thank them for volunteering. The TC’s and ATC’s have been working since June of last year to put together fabulous trips and ski season. They include Patty Finch, Laurie Rivkind, Judy Schiro, Trish Ramirez, Melinda Hughes, Sandra McCunis, Anne Marchetti, Jeannine Jiral, Jan Ferrell, Brenda Souileau, Llona Doubet,. Marsha Lutz, Barb Erlich, Leyla Ozkardesh and Rita Cardenas.
Strange as it may seem, but in the midst of all of this cold weather and snow covered mountains, we will be working on next year’s trips soon. Please consider being a TC or ATC for next year. Although it is a lot of work, it is very rewarding. And without our volunteers, we wouldn’t exist as a club. |

| From the Membership Desk | By Jessica Halter, VP of Membership |
Congrats, SCSC. Thanks to efforts of all members, we now have over 700 members and still adding more!
Check out the latest contest and earn a year’s free membership for getting your friends to join SCSC! In an effort to increase membership, your Executive Committee has agreed that any new member who joins this spring will be a member through the 2007-2008 ski season. So a new member could get up to 18 months of membership for the price of 12 months. What a DEAL, right?
DID YOU KNOW MAY IS A VERY IMPORTANT MONTH FOR SCSC?
We are starting early this year to REMIND EVERYONE that discounted membership renewals are May 1 st – 31st ONLY!!! All one-year memberships expire on May 1st of each year. According to SCSC Standing Rules, “Members who renew their current membership within the first month of the membership year will receive a $5 discount per membership.” The early renewal price will be $35 for Single Membership and $55 for Dual Membership. On June 1st, any member who has not renewed must pay the full price of $40 for Single Membership and $60 for Dual Membership AND must be reconfirmed and approved by the Executive Committee. Single memberships may NOT be converted to dual memberships at any time during the year except for the May renewal month. During this one month, members may renew using PayPal via the website or in person with the VP of Membership at the General Meeting or Happy Hour. Multi-year memberships are also available.
Having just returned from a trip, I thought it might be a good idea to let new members know (and remind existing members) that each member should take the time to read the club’s Bylaws and Standing Rules. You can find these on the SCSC website, www.spacecityskiclub.org, when you log in under “My SCSC.” Simply click on “Bylaws” or “Standing Rules” (right under all of the blue tabs) to read the rules that govern our club.
So continue to share the good news about SCSC and let’s expand our circle of friends with new memberships! |
