          Sitzmarke Online   August, 2007

From Mission ControlBy Pat Piech, Space City Ski Club President

Well, things are getting pretty exciting now. Throughout the summer, the team has been busy working on plans for the upcoming ski season. The VP of Trips, Ted Widmer, along with the two Directors of Trips, Marsha Lutz and Judy Schiro, have created an absolutely FABULOUS schedule of ski trips for 2007-2008. Be sure to review all of the trip articles as well as the schedule in this issue. Early sign-up begins Monday August 13 and many of the trips will sell quickly so take advantage of this early sign-up offer. As in previous years, you can sign up for trips and pay for your deposit via PayPal as well as snail mail.

Just as we have been busy planning our ski trips., so has it been with the general meetings. Our first meeting of the season is set for Monday, September 10 at Vargo’s at 2401 Fondren, just north of Westheimer. It is a great venue and this meeting will feature all of the ski trips. It will be one of your first opportunities to discuss the trip details and options with the respective leaders. For future meetings, I hope to have a series of interesting and fun topics throughout the year and your ideas and suggestions are always welcome. Feel free to contact either me or the VP of Programs, Sandy Wellhausen-Perry, with your thoughts.

SCSC is nothing without its members and we can never have too many. Remember, you must be an active member to sign up for any of the upcoming ski trips… so if you haven’t yet renewed your membership be sure to do it right away. And right now, we have the "Recruit a New Member" contest in full swing. It is a fun contest and rewards the efforts of those recruiting for Space City Ski Club. All of the details are posted on the SCSC website. Feel free to contact Camille LaRoe with any questions.

Beat the heat and think snow… it will be here before you know it!!

Having A Blast!By Sandy Perry, Space City Ski Club VP of Programs

In a few weeks we will start our monthly general meetings at Vargos Restaurant. The first meeting will be Monday, September 10 at 6:30 p.m. The theme will be Ski Trip Sign-up for the many exciting trips SCSC has planned for us.

The Volunteer Party was a huge success in spite of all the rain. The food was fabulous and our volunteers did a terrific job setting this up. A huge thanks to Mary Wollman, Christina Anderson, Larry Christie, Camille LaRoe, George Lopez, Dan Taylor, Patti Welch, Dennis and Bobbie Brittain, Diane Baker, Bob Horan, Robert Clements, Cindy Moore, Deb Cini, and Leyla Ozkardesh, for all their hard work. And, thanks to both Dawn Rodriguez for opening up her beautiful home to us and all the volunteers for their hard work.

We have some very exciting non-ski activities coming up. Some of the activities we have planned include:

ACTIVITIES

  • 8/11/07 Tandem Sky Diving, AC: Chip Stokes
  • 8/23/07 Happy Hour at Vargo’s Restaurant
  • 8/30/07 Happy Hour and Dart Tournament at BJ’s Sports Bar, AC: Laura Carmin
  • 9/10/07 General Meeting at Vargo’s
  • 9/27/07 Happy Hour at PK’s Blue Water Grill, Coordinator: Barbara Rossetti
  • 9/29/07 Italian Wine Tasting, AC: Cindy Moore, AAC: Bernie Colella
  • 10/08/07 General Meeting at Vargo’s
  • 11/12/07 General Meeting at Vargo’s
  • 11/30/07 Annual Christmas Gala

We are working on several fun activities including a bus trip to Wurstfest, a Fashion Show, a bowling tournament, and a bus trip to the casinos. We plan to include several traditional activities such as Laser Tag and Mardi Gras. We need activity coordinators to lead these activities. We are also interested in hearing what activities you would like to see SCSC get involved in. If any of you are interested in volunteering as an activity coordinator or have ideas you wish to share, please contact me at sandywp.ski@gmail.com or Christina Anderson (Director of Programs) at andersoncmt@hotmail.com.

Sunshine Kids AuctionBy Marti Turner

I had the honor of presenting The Sunshine Kids with donations totaling $6,002 from our May Auction. For the twelfth year, SCSC members gave a special gift to this terrific organization! Brooke Webster, Director of Development with the Sunshine Kids, was extremely appreciative of our continued support to help children with cancer and their families with fun and educational activities, as well as, emotional support.

Coordinating SCSC’s annual auction is one of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities in our club because you see how generous both our club members and many businesses are in helping this cause. Thank you to everyone who donated an item, contacted a donor, or came and bid at the auction. It took everyone to have this success! Several of the people involved in the intense bidding were George Lopez, Ron Rambin, Ted Widmer, Linda Guice, Lori Gilliland, Ted Bergeron, John Flatten, Shirley Lang, Sally Templeton and Linda Licarione. (Of course not all of them were the highest bidders). I also want to thank some special volunteers that helped with the auction: Frank Andrews, our auctioneer, Bruce Lowther, Keith Kirkman, Diane Stotz, Gary Butler, Ellen Eastham, and Diane Jamail. I also want to thank Melanie Morin, who did much of the work coordinating the auction before she was transferred.

Thank you to all of the following businesses and individuals that graciously donated items for the auction:

  • Texas Association of Single Sailors (TASS)
  • Sportours Diane Morish
  • Merle Norman on Ella Blvd
  • Kayleen Kill & John Rice
  • Elyse Turla
