From Mission ControlBy Pat Piech, Space City Ski Club President

Well, early trip sign-up is in full swing and I hope you are planning one or more fabulous trips with your friends at Space City Ski Club. All of the trips are great… but there are some favorites this year not to miss. Whistler is always a great destination that we haven’t been to in several years. Telluride is always a favorite and this year should be even better as a TSC trip. Bansko, Bulgaria promises to be a fabulous destination and the pre & post trip options are really special. If you don’t want to travel overseas, the Quebec trip will give you a European experience on this side of the Atlantic. Also, Quebec is celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2008 which will make this trip all the more memorable.

September 10th at Vargo’s where all of the trips will be featured and the various TC’s and ATC’s will be on hand to answer any questions and sign you up. Remember, you must be an active member to sign up for any trip, so if you haven’t renewed your membership for this year… now is the time!!

Skiing is just some of the activities we have planned for this year. We have several fun events planned including the Italian Wine Tasting set for September 29 at Cindy Moore’s home. Happy hour is also a fun get together this month at PK’s Blue Water Grill on the 27th. All of the events, dates and times are always posted on the SCSC website and in this issue. We work hard to find fun activities to bring our members together. If you have any ideas of what you would like to do or would like to coordinate an event, contact Sandy Wellhausen Perry with your ideas. She can help you put the final details together and the word out to the membership.

As I mentioned earlier, our general meetings will start up again this month at Vargo’s. Vargo’s has been a convenient and flexible venue for our meetings. Their facility is great as is their restaurant. I encourage you to enjoy dinner or snack at Vargo’s after our monthly meetings. It is a delicious treat.

See you at the meetings, happy hours and activities --- and think snow!

Having A Blast!By Christina Anderson, Director of Programs & Sandy Perry VP of Programs

filled and active. We start with our September meeting on the 10th. All our Ski trips will be the highlight. And you will be able to hear all the details, visit with the trip leaders, collect the information and sign up!

Your Activities Program Team, Sandy Perry and I, will also have lots of information on the non-ski activities we have planned. We know skiing is our main focus, however, between trips we hope to keep you all busy and active. We are always looking for new activities and events that will appeal to our members. As we have many new joining members, I’m sure they also have some great new ideas. So, bring us your ideas, talents, and enthusiasm. If you would like to lead an activity, we will be there to assist in the coordination. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Countdown to LiftoffBy Ted Widmer, Vice President of Trips

full. It is my guess that if you want to go with us to Telluride and you have not signed up yet, by the time you read this you will be relegated to the waiting list. But there are nine others that would love to have you join us.

The Thanksgiving trip to Keystone is well over half full three days into early signup. This is our one trip where families are welcome and has a youth camp with four days of lessons.

Copper Mountain is our only December destination this year. It is in the heart of Summit County. If you get tired of all there is to ski and do at Copper you can use Summit County’s bus transportation to ski Keystone, Breckenridge or A Basin. Even Vail is close enough for a day trip.

In my opinion, the Vail long and short trips will be as exciting as any. These are Ski Council trips where Texas about takes over Vail. There are constant activities for those who want them or just ski and hang out at the newly refurbished Simba Run condos.

We have two Canada trips this year. The first goes to Whistler just north of Vancouver. If you have not been, Vancouver is like San Francisco with a friendly Canadian accent and Whistler is a western version of Vail with lots and lots of skiing and, lots and lots to do.

The Quebec trip in early March is a ski council trip with incomparable scenery. We are staying in the old city which is the only walled city in North America. You will think you are in Austria as you ski one of the most unique areas in Canada.

Our winter expedition is to Bansko, Bulgaria. It is picturesque Europe at its best with a new and modern ski area at third world prices. The old world history and architecture would take up your time were it not a ski trip. Plus the post-trip jaunt is to Turkey on the way home which beats the heck out of Applejacks.

Steamboat Springs is filling fast and may only have room on the waiting list by the time you read this. Dennis and Melinda have arranged to fly right into Hayden from IAH so only a short bus ride gets you to skiing.

If you are having trouble making up your mind, come to our first meeting at Vargos on September 10. All of the trips will have tables set up and the trip leaders will be there to talk to you about their trips.

See you on the slopes. I am the old guy way back behind you.
