SCSC NEXT GENERAL MEETING NOVEMBER 12, 2007

From Mission ControlBy Pat Piech, Space City Ski Club President

I smell snow!!! Yes, the first snow fall has hit the Rockies and I am pretty excited that our ski season begins this month. I can hardly wait. I hope all of you are well into your planning for the season and have several trips booked with the club.

We do offer more than ski trips and have a great collection of activities for our members. Our day trip to Wurstfest early this month is a great example of the kind of activities we work to bring to our membership. Another great annual event is our Holiday Gala which is set for November 30 at Vargo’s. The gala features a fabulous Vargo’s dinner and music by Van Lang. Be sure to check the SCSC website for the latest in activities and ski trips.

Have you ever thought about a leadership position in SCSC? I can tell you from personal experience that it is quite rewarding and fun (yes, really!) to contribute your time and effort an organization that helps create good times and good relationships.

We will be organizing a Nominating committee to find next year’s leaders. If you have ever assisted in leading an SCSC activity or trip and have good leadership skills, then you need to consider serving as an officer of SCSC! Do you have some ideas that you think would help SCSC grow? Do you perhaps have a great accounting background that would be beneficial for the treasurer position? If so, more information will be located on the SCSC website regarding the 2008-09 Nominating Committee.

See you at the activities and trips in the near future!

That’s all for now.. and THINK SNOW!

Having A Blast!By Sandy Perry, VP of Programs

Our next meeting, November 12th, will be the annual SCSC Fashion Show. The fabulous fashions will be courtesy of Sun & Ski Sports.  Sun & Ski Sports has a large selection of ski clothes and equipment.  If you are in need of new ski clothes or equipment, please stop by one of their locations.   We are sure you will find something you like.  And you do not want miss our own ski members walk down Vargo’s runway.  For more information contact our Fashion Show Coordinator, Gloria Lopez at maggiemae@sbcglobal.net .

We have scheduled a fun activity for you.  We promise you all will have a great time on our Wurstfest Bus Trip to New Braunfels on November 3.  We will have food, beer, wine, and soft drinks on the bus.  We will depart Houston at 1:00 pm and return to Houston at 1:00 am. You will have an opportunity to enjoy the fun music by a local Houston area band called “Alpenfest”.   If you don’t know who they are --- well, they are the German band that was on the recent Blue Bell Ice Cream Anniversary commercial!  They really know how to draw you into participating in the dancing and singing along with them.  Here is an excerpt from their website:

Alpenfest is much more than an oompah band. Our specialties include four thirteen foot Swiss alphorns, a tuned set of Austrian cowbells, Holzanes G’LŖchter (German xylophone), tuned musical hand saws, and yodeling.

Audience participation is an important part of our show with singing, dancing, swinging back and forth with the music, and performing songs with the band. The “Chicken Dance” and other fun novelty songs are always enjoyable.

The price of $55.00 covers the bus charges, lunch and drinks on the bus, and the Wurstfest entry fee. Wurstfest has several food booths to choose from and they have a selection of beer and wine.  There will be several bands to enjoy.  This is a festival for the young and the old, as well as all ages between. We have room to expand up to 15 more participants.  If you are interested in going, you must have your check to Sandy Perry no later than October 25th.  Contact Sandy Perry at sandywp.ski@gmail.com  or Christina Anderson at andersoncmt@hotmail.com for more details.

Our Annual Holiday Gala is Friday, November 30 at Vargo’s Restaurant.  We will have a fabulous dinner with Vargo’s and wonderful music by Van Lang.  The Gala starts at 7:30 and the cost is $45.00 per person.  Please contact our activity coordinator, Ann Dorn at specialdorn@yahoo.com for more details.

SCSC’s Thanksgiving happy hour will be November 8th at the beautiful Las Alamedas restaurant at 8615 Katy Freeway. There will be a free buffet from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm.  Please note that Las Alamedas will add 20% gratuity to your bar tab, so you won’t have to worry about leaving a tip!  The Christmas happy hour will be December 13th at a new restaurant called Saga located at 3017 Miliam.  Saga is owned by Polo of Polo’s Signature.  There will be a free buffet, live music and complimentary valet from 6 to 8 pm.  Appropriate dress is required.  You can contact our happy hour coordinator, Barbara Rossetti for more details.

Countdown to LiftoffBy Ted Widmer, Vice President of Trips

Some folks believe in extra insurance and some do not. So I am passing the trip insurance information we have from the Texas Ski Council. I have never used this product and therefore cannot endorse it. If it helps you, I am happy. If it is full of hassles, I am sorry, but do not take responsibility for it.

For 5% of the cost of your trip, you can insure you will not lose money if you cannot go or your trip is cut short. The insurable instances they talk about include:

Someone in your immediate family has an illness or injury even if they are not scheduled to travel with you. You become ill and cannot travel. Weather prevents you from leaving home and reaching your destination. A family member back home passes away and you must return from your vacation early. Your luggage or ski equipment is lost or delayed by the airline. You twist your ankle and must visit a doctor while traveling.

This insurance plan covers pre and post departure expenses for the following:

Your trip investment if you must cancel or interrupt your trip for covered reasons such as sickness, injury or death to you, your traveling companion or a family member, severe weather, you are required to serve on a jury, or if your principal residence is made uninhabitable. You miss your flight for covered reasons such as bad weather. It covers emergency medical service expenses incurred while traveling. (Out-patient care is subject to $100.00 deductible).

If your baggage or ski equipment is lost stolen or damaged, you will be reimbursed up to $1,000.00 of the value subject to a 50.00 deductible. This insurance can be purchased on line at http://www.texas-ski.org/#aig. You may also call Travel Guard at 1-866-385-4839
