| From Mission Control | By Pat Piech, Space City Ski Club President |
The holidays are a great time… lots of fun, lots of parties and lots of good times. And hopefully lots of skiing. By the time you read this, Anne Marchetti and her adventurous group have skied Keystone for Thanksgiving and the Copper trip led by Trish Rameriz is heading out for a early December vacation. Our busiest ski months are right around the corner with 7 groups hitting the slopes with SCSC. I hope your season is all scheduled, but if not, be sure to contact the trip leaders and get on their wait list. You never know when a cancellation opens up and space becomes available.
For those staying at home, we have other events and activities planned for our members. We will celebrate at our Annual Holiday Gala on November 30th. Our other upcoming events include a super fun Bowling Tournament in January and the always outrageous Mardi Gras celebration in Galveston in February. Be sure to checkout the SCSC website for all of the details. SCSC activities are great fun and we are always on the lookout for new ideas and volunteers. If you would like to help out with an activity, just contact our VP of Programs, Sandy Perry. She can fill you in on all of the details on activities in the works.
Finally, on behalf of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for the Space City Ski Club, I would like to extend our sincere best wishes to all of you for a happy and healthy holiday season.
See you on the slopes and think SNOW! |

Katy Stomp and Wine Tasting (recap)
On October 27th, Christina Anderson, Mary Wollman, Judy Schiro, Ron Hayes, David Cone, Barbara Belzung, Lynn Burch and Sandy Perry and a couple of friends of Ron and Judy met at the Katy Stomp and Wine Tasting. We tasted wines from several vendors and snacked on appetizers. The location for the Wine Stomp was in a beautiful garden at The Pink Magnolia. If we had only known that it was in a garden, we would not have worn our high heels! Some of us enjoyed the wine so much that we bought wine to take home. This wine tasting was a benefit for Susan Komen Breast Cancer Center.
Wurstfest (recap)
On November 3 rd 39 participants hopped on the bus heading for New Braunfels to help salute the German sausage, better known as "Wurstfest". This is New Braunfels version of Octoberfest. The bus was late because the driver got lost and Sandy had to go and find him and lead him to our pickup location. Once we got the bus to the pickup location, we proceeded to load the bus with beer, wine, ice and people. After everyone settled in, had eaten their lunch from Jason’s Deli and put a few drinks in their tummy and well on our way to New Braunfels, we were all happy again.
Gary Barrett was so enthralled with the food that he waited an hour and a half in line for a pork chop on a stick. I hope it was worth it! Marsha and Peggy went shopping at the booths in the Marketplatz. Several visited the Craft Show. Dianne Duperier and friends made sure they got to meet the Wurstfest Dignitaries. Cliff Jacobs and Cindy Moore stayed at Wursthalle almost all day and evening where they danced (Cindy in her dance shoes and Cliff on his roller skates) almost non-stop to the great polkas and waltzes. They were quite a couple amongst the polka dancers. Christina and friends enjoyed the Chicken Dance so much, that they were seen doing it several times.
The Granbery sisters, Susan and Sarah, plus two friends, who joined the club just for this trip, grabbed an outside table, loaded it with pitchers of beer, and watched the passing parade. They were soon joined by three guys from San Antonio, who compared notes with them on the talent, then their next group of friends had a deck of cards and a Texas Hold’em game involving the whole table was soon underway. I bet Mother Theresa was making sure they played the game fair!
The Wellhausen family took in the food, music and dance, as we usually do. We took in the yodeling and then made our way to the big tent to watch our favorite band, “Alpenfest”. Chris and his aunt Sandy went people watching. (Well actually I watched my nephew getting to know some young ladies with his pitcher of beer.) Sandy also modeled her chicken hat, but found it to be too hot to wear all day.
Everyone promptly loaded the bus for the return home. Some took a nap while others told their Wurstfest stories. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to hear all the stories or they would be in this article!

| Countdown to Liftoff | By Ted Widmer, Vice President of Trips |

December is a great time of year and our ski trips are ready to kick into high gear. By the time you read this, our Thanksgiving trip will have already returned and the early season trip to Copper Mountain will be ready to return to Houston as well. Coming up are some fabulous destinations and space is still available.
The club is spending mid January in Canada at Whistler/Blackcomb. If you have never been to Whistler, you really need to consider this trip. By January, the average base over the last 7 years has been over 200 inches, so the snow should be great. Couple that with great trails and a fun town and it will be a vacation to remember. Get with Bruce Baird or Jill Nanney for more details. The other trip that promises to be fantastic is also in Canada and that is Quebec. In addition to the skiing, the town of Quebec is celebrating its 400 th year and it is going all out for the celebration. Plus, it is a TSC trip and we will be bringing a bit of Texas to the French Canadians. Be sure to be a part of the fun and history. Leyla Ozkardesh is the TC for this trip and contact her or Leslie Cashio for the entire scoop.
Our other trips, Bansko, Telluride and Steamboat, are all at capacity at this time. But if you are flexible and interested in one of these trips, you might want to get on the waiting list. You never know when someone needs to drop off.
Finally, please take a minute and thank all of the trip coordinators, their assistants and the directors for all of the hard work getting this ski season underway. They have done a terrific job. |
