FROM MISSION CONTROLBy Camille La Roe, Space City Ski Club President

We may not have SCSC General Meetings in the summer but your Board of Directors, Executive Committee and TSC rep have been attending a lot of meetings this summer and working overtime laying the ground work for a fantastic year.  I appreciate all the time they have put in preparing officer’s budgets, trip budgets, trip venues, recruiting TC’s and ATC’s, and organizing activities and happy hours. Chuck Pena, our TSC representative, recently attended a quarterly TSC meeting in Austin which he will be updating you on in the Sitz. The year has barely begun and everyone has already contributed a lot of volunteer hours to date.  Thanks to all for your hard work and support.

Please keep in mind that we are already taking deposits for trips but that you must be an active member to sign up or even put a deposit down on a trip.  If you haven’t renewed your membership don’t delay or you might find yourself left out of the trip of a lifetime in 2009/2010.  You also will not receive a Sitzmarke if your membership is not current after June 30th.  Our VP of Membership and all of the Executive Committee would welcome any member’s input on more and better ways to promote SCSC and increase our membership.  If you have a head for PR and have a few extra hours to volunteer for our club please give myself or Patty Finch a call.  We have struggled over the past couple of years to find new and better ways to find members and perhaps you could be the volunteer that makes the difference.

I am looking forward to the coming General Meetings and hope to plan some fun and interesting programs throughout the year.  I think that the first General Meeting on September 14th is pretty much all about trips and we should probably leave that alone! I have asked Mary Wollman with the assistance of Gloria Lopez to host a Winter Fashion show for us in November.  Start cleaning out your closets and we will also have our annual ski swap before we start leaving on trips this Winter.  What would December be without the Annual Sunshine Kids Auction and I am counting on some volunteer support for this one!  If you have any ideas or would like to assist with any Programs in the upcoming year please do not hesitate to contact me.

Beat the heat and think snow… it will be here before you know it!!

Countdown to LiftoffBy Melinda Hughes, Vice President of Trips

June officially launched us into our new year of trip sign up.  It started with a blast so sign up for your preferred trip early or you may miss out!!  You can cancel up to August 15th  without a penalty so take advantage of the early sign up policy.

The TC’s and ATC’s are working on their budgets and negotiating great trip prices this year.  All flights are direct when possible and we have our preferred lodging assigned to us on the TSC trips.  The club trips all have ski in/out lodging so this is the year for convenience!  The only trip pending is Telluride.  If you are interested in running this club trip or another location, please contact me at vptrips@spacecityskiclub.org.

Remember, you are the component to a successful year and are why all of the volunteers are working so hard.  Help us out and have fun on one, two, or all of the trips we’ve lined up for the year.

Have a great summer!

Having A Blast!By Sandra McCunis, Vice President of Activities

We began the summer having a blast at the AIA Sandcastle Competition and the Happy Hour and Pool Tournament.  We are looking forward to more opportunities to have a blast throughout the summer.  Let’s continue to mingle with our SCSC friends by participating in our planned activities and Happy Hours.

On Saturday, July 18th, we will be attending the Miller Outdoor Theatre’s performance of “50’s Dance Party”.  Grab your lawn chair and join us on the hill for the 50th anniversary tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the “Big Bopper” with an authentic re-creation of their Winter Dance Party Tour of 1959.  Contact Barbie Miller to sign up for this free event.

Our Volunteer Party will be at the home of Stan and Linda Kuper on Saturday, July 25th.  We can enjoy a relaxing day lounging around their pool while sipping on frozen Margaritas, wine and beer.  We will be serving Robert and Bruce’s award winning barbeque. I need volunteers to help with the party.  If you have not volunteered during the year, please contact me to help and be included in this fun-filled day.  Those who have not volunteered or guest may attend the party for a cost of $15.00 per person.

SCSC has 26 seats reserved for the Houston Astros versus Milwaukee Brewers game on Sunday, August 9th.  This is a “family optional” activity.  Contact Cindy Moore regarding available seats.  Since we don’t have General Meetings in the summer, I have planned an additional Happy Hour & Social with TASS on Thursday, August 13th.  This will be an opportunity to meet new friends and sign up for optional sailing and activities.  We are still working to coordinate a joint activity for a Sailing & Pool Party at Portofino Yacht Club.  The tentative date has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 10th

We will be attending the TUTS performance of “Grease” at the Hobby Center on Sunday, September 20th with a Cocktail Party before the show at the home of Kay McKeough.  Don’t miss this exciting performance of “Grease” which was Time Magazine’s 2007 pick for #1 musical of the year.  There are limited seats available so contact Kay to reserve your seat now.

Laura Carmin will be organizing the Dart Tournament & Halloween Party again this year.  Olga Adair will coordinate a performance of Opera in the Heights later this year.  Other activities that we are considering include Bowling, Pub Crawl and a Houston Rockets game.

I welcome your ideas and suggestions for future activities.  Please consider volunteering to be an Activity Coordinator so that we can offer you a variety of fun and exciting activities and continue Having a Blast!

SCSC Bid Fest 2010

March 26th – 28th, 2010

Chuck Pena                penaca23@gmail.com

Hello fellow SCSC members!  It’s Chuck, your TSC rep., yep I asked them to let me do it again this year.  Wanted to fill you in on some really exciting and some not so exciting news from my June 6th Quarterly Delegates meeting in Austin

First the exciting news!!  Houston has been selected for the site of the 2010 Ski Bid Selection meeting.  Now is your chance to help pick the next slate of TSC trips.  It will be at the West Loop Marriott (near San Felipe and West Loop I-610).  It is scheduled for Friday March 26th to Sunday March 28th, official bid meetings all day Saturday and Sunday morning.

So on top of the great things that happen at the bid meeting you have the extra advantage of planning a great weekend in a happening part of Houston.  So I hope you will all join me and make it the best bid fest ever and make Houston the preferred bid selection city.

In order to make this happen we are going to need a lot of volunteers from Space City and we are really counting on you.  I know it is a long way off but a lot of planning goes on in to these types of events and we need to send an early message to assure our new TSC President Cheryl Mann that she was correct in selecting Houston, despite the fact the that her volunteer base was in Dallas. So please save the dates and when we start asking for volunteers please put your name on to the list early.  For those golfers out there, if you can get us a great deal on Friday morning golfing let me know, as this is a traditional event that happens on Friday morning before the bid meeting.  Lisa Spotts arranged a wine tour/tasting as an alternative option for Friday, so other ideas are needed too.  I’m current tossing around the idea of a beer tour at St Arnold\\\'s in Houston.

The TSC is looking for members for the trip pre-selection committee, past SCSC officer involvement required.

For that racer out there they are looking at revising the brackets for the individual races only.  They are looking at a revision that will mainly affect the open class.  They want to break the open (under 50) class into 3 groups.   If you have an opinion on this tell an officer, director, or me.

YOUR MEMBERSHIP HAS EXPIRED

On April 30, all 2008 - 2009 memberships expired.  There was a grace period until May 31 to renew and also still receive the June Sitzmarke.  As of JUNE 30, 2009, persons who have not renewed their membership will be deactivated from the mailing list.  If you have already renewed, thanks for your promptness.  If you have not yet renewed, please read the following information in order not to lose access to your membership privileges, such as the Sitzmarke and participating in early ski trip sign-ups.

Fees:  As of June 1, 2009, the fee for single membership renewal will be $40.00 ($60.00 for dual memberships).  If you fail to renew by July 1, 2009, you will not have the access necessary information for trip sign-ups and will not receive your Sitzmarke.

You can download an application by going to www.spacecityskiclub.org and clicking on the membership tab where you will find a link:  “click here to download a membership application form”.  Just print, fill it out and send it in with your payment.

The quickest and easiest way to renew is online:

  1. Go to www.spacecityskiclub.org and click on the “My SCSC” tab.
  2. Log in with your username and password.  The light blue print above “Here are your member-only features” verifies your membership expiration date.
  3. Click on “Update My Membership Profile” and check all information for accuracy, including your e-mail address.  Save any changes.
  4. Click on the “Renew My Membership” button.  Decide if you want a single year membership (through 4/10) or multi-year membership, so you don’t have to renew each year.
  5. Proceed through PayPal to complete your payment.

Click on the “My SCSC” tab and then click on the “SCSC members may request an account here
link.  You will need your member number which can be found on a Sitzmarke label.
