          Sitzmarke Online   August, 2009

From Mission ControlBy Camille LaRoe, Space City Ski Club President

Here it is August already and I am getting really excited about the upcoming year! September will be here before you know it and the plans that our team have been making all summerwill start coming together. Mark Monday, September 14th on your calendars for our first 2009/2010 General Meeting atDave & Buster’s on Richmond at 6:30. This meeting will feature all of the trips from Thanksgiving to the Summer Expedition in the Fall of 2010. Melinda Hughes and her DOT’s,Bill Bomberger and Thuy Rocque, have certainly come up with some great locations for club trips along with the TSCdestinations. The quantity of trips SCSC is offering this year is fantastic with destinations for the skier, snowboarder, nonskier, shopper or destination traveler. Be sure and attend so that you will not miss the opportunity to discuss the details and options with the respective trip leaders and ATC’s. We have a lot of deposits in hand already so don’t be left out. Renew your membership and be prepared to make a deposit in September or before. You must be an active member to make a deposit and deposits are already being taken for all trips.

Looking down the road I am trying to put together some fun and interesting General Meetings for the remainder of the year. I need VOLUNTEERS, VOLUNTEERS AND MORE VOLUNTEERS! I am looking for volunteers for the Annual Sunshine Kids Auction as well as some help with the November Fashion Show and an October Ski Swap. Please give me a call if you would be willing to come to my aid! I imagine putting together an additional program for October to accompany the Ski Swap and any ideas would be greatly appreciated to that end. Drop me an email if there are any programs that you have particularly enjoyed in the past or would like to see in the future.

Keep reading and you will see all the great activities and Happy Hours Sandra McCunis is organizing and additionalinformation from the TC’s on all of the great trips. Come outand enjoy the rest of the summer with your SCSC friends at activities and Happy Hours.

SCSC knows how to beat the heat even without Snow!

Countdown to LiftoffBy Melinda Hughes, Vice President of Trips

The summer has been a great kick-off for trip sign up. I hope that you have renewed your membership and talked some new friends into joining SCSC because the time is here to sign up for all of the SCSC 2009-2010 ski trips! One trip has sold all of their air packages and others are slowly catching up. Telluride is officially on the schedule for January 23 through the 30th. Currently, George Lopez is working on several different package ideas and the final, approved one will be published soon. SCSC members can sign up for any trip and drop without penalty until August 15th. From the 15th on, penalties will apply. If you mail a check to the TC, please use the form in this Sitzmarke to provide all the contact information, your preference of land or full package and your member number. If you don’t remember your member number, look on the mailing label on your Sitzmarke and you will find it after the date. We have a limited number of land packages so please be patient with the TC’s while inquiring about a trip.

The sign-up form is also available on the website at the top of the Trips page. If you want the convenience of using your credit card and to accrue more airline miles, there is still PayPal. If you have trouble, please let us know and we will try to make it work for you. There is information on the website if you have problems signing up with Paypal. Don’t be left out in the cold!!! Sign up for a trip and join your fellow SCSC members on the slopes.

Having A Blast!By Sandra McCunis, Vice President of Activities

We have been having a blast during the summer and we will continue to enjoy more fun activities in the month of August. Our General Meetings will resume in September at Dave & Busters and we will be busy planning our ski trips for the 2009-2010 season. In the meantime, let’s stay in touch with ourSCSC friends and continue to participate in our Happy Hoursand scheduled activities.

Chip Stokes organized our 5th annual Pool Tournament at the June Happy Hour. Twenty participants competed in the tournament and cash prizes were awarded to the winners. John Flatten and Ellen Eastham won 1st and 2nd place in the Amateur division. Erich Landrum of Austin Skiers and Bob Olsen won 1st and 2nd place in the Experienced division. Larry Brown and Laura Carmin won 1st place in the Coed division and Ron Davis and Olga Adair won 2nd place.

Barbie Miller did a great job organizing a group of 35 people to attend the performance of “50’s Dance Party” at the Miller Outdoor Theatre on July 18th. Unfortunately, the rain spoiled the group activity on the hill. However, those that did attend sat in the seats and enjoyed a very entertaining show.

The month of August promises to offer opportunities for more fun and exciting activities. Cindy Moore will be leading a group of 26 people to see the Houston Astros versus Milwaukee Brewers game on Sunday, August 9th. Don’t miss an opportunity to meet new friends at our Happy Hour & Social with TASS at Café Byblos on August 13th. You will have a chance to sign up for their optional Sailing and Toga Party on Saturday, August 22nd. Our monthlySCSC Happy Hour will be at Guadalajara Hacienda on August 27th. Also, Deb Cini is working on setting a date for a Pool Party & Luau at her home.

The fun will continue into the fall with more planned activities. Kay McKeough will be hosting a Cocktail Party at her home before the exciting TUTS performance of “Grease” at the Hobby Center on September 20th. Olga Adair has volunteered to coordinate a Pool party and Sailing with TASS at Portofino Yacht Club on October 10th. Laura Carmin will be organizing a Dart Tournament and Halloween Party at our October Happy Hour. Diane Stotz has volunteered to be the AC for a performance of “The Lighter Side of the Recession” at the Radio Music Theatre on November 6th. Our annual SCSC Gala will be at Capone’s on November 14th.

Our volunteers are working to coordinate activities and events for your enjoyment so please participate. We want you to keep Having a Blast!

Bill Bomberger, 2009-2010 DOT— Space City Ski Club

I joined the ski club way back in 1993 when I got tired of my friends canceling out of ski trips at the last minute. I have not been skiing with them since. Over the years I have been a trip leader 4 times, assistant trip leader 1 time, and run numerous activities for the club.

I have been the Treasurer and VP Publications (twice), DOT for the ski club and on the board of directors for all of the years after being an officer.

Other hobbies and interests that I currently enjoy are SKIING, woodworking, roller blading, and bicycling. Professionally I am the Production Control Manager for a company located in Stafford Texas for the last 20+ years. My second job is as a Captain in the Stafford Fire Department.

After all of that, I should be able to find time to be a DOT for Melinda Hughes.
