          Sitzmarke Online   February, 2010

From Mission ControlBy Camille LaRoe, Space City Ski Club President

I can`t believe it is February already. All of the great trips Melinda, her DOT`s, TC`s and ATC`s have worked so hard on selling and organizing for the last nine or ten months, are almost half over. No wonder we have to start pricing and cajoling you to sign up so early. VP of Activities, Sandra McCunis, and her AC`s still have a great variety of activities and Happy Hours in full swing, so don’t forget to check those out between trips. I am trying to add a new section to the website devoted to Post Trip and Activity articles which I think will show prospective members all of the fun trips and activities we enjoy throughout the year. In the interim check out Judy Schiro`s Vail post trip article in the online Sitz.

We only have 3 months left in our SCSC 2009/2010 year. Our 2010/2011 officer nominees will be publically announced at our General Meeting on February 8th. Check out each of their articles in this month`s Sitz. I think you will see a lot of returning faces for which I commend them for stepping up for a second stint. I think this group of seven will be a great team to represent us in the new decade and I thank all of them for volunteering their time to lead our organization. I hope that you will give each of them your full support and votes at the March General Meeting.

I hope everyone is having a great year on the slopes with more a good times to come. Come out and join us at the next Happy Hour and at the February General Meeting.

Countdown to LiftoffBy Melinda Hughes, Vice President of Trips

The Breckenridge is underway as I write and we have two trips already considered history for this season. The rest of the trips are winding up registration and participants ready to hit the slopes! Believe it or not, we’re already considering next year’s slate and are evaluating an August ski trip to Ushuaia, Argentina. To help make next year’s season successful, we need your input. Would you like to see more short trips, a March family optional trip at spring break, unusual locations, new ski locations, and _______? I need your help to fill in the blank! It seems early; however, please consider becoming a TC or ATC next year to help with the next trip line up. Please e-mail me at vptrips@spacecityskiclub.org with any suggestions. Have fun on the slopes!

NOMINATIONS FOR CLUB OFFICERS—2010/2011

Nominee for President – Sandy Wellhausen

I am very much honored to be nominated as President of Space City Ski Club. I joined Space City Ski Club 12years ago. During those 12 years I have enjoyed manyactivities, ski trips and met many wonderful peoplethrough our club.

I have served Space City Ski Club as VP of Publicationsas well as VP of Programs and Activities. I have servedas TC and ATC for a few ski trips and AC for variousactivities. I also volunteer for Houston Livestock Showand Rodeo. When I am not volunteering, I am traveling, skiing, scuba diving, and sailing or out dancing as muchas possible – great exercise.

Some of my goals for the2010/2011 year include increasing membership, creating funand informative meetings and offering new, fun activities for allof us to enjoy. With our great group of officers that are being nominated, we will work hard to make this club efficient, interesting and fun.

I wish to thank the nominating committee for selecting me as club president. I would greatly appreciate your vote. Should I be elected, I look forward to serving you a fun, informative and exciting 2010/2011 year.

VP Activities—Sandra McCunis

I would like to thank the nominating committee for their confidence in my ability and I am honored to be nominated to serve a second term as Vice President of Activities. I have been a member of Space City Ski Club since 1980 and have participated in numerous domestic and international ski trips and activities. I have met a lot of great people and made many new friends since joining SCSC.

After enjoying many years of membership, I wanted to become involved in the organization of the club. Prior to serving as Vice President of Activities, I have volunteered at the General Meetings and Volunteer Parties. I was the ATC for Park City in 2007, the ATC for Bansko in 2008 and the TC for Steamboat in 2009. I also served on the 2008-2009  nominating committee for officers.

My goals for the 2010- 2011 year are to continue coordinating new and exciting activities to complement our traditional activities and events. Member participation in activities increased in 2009 and I hope to continue active participation and offer members more opportunities to expand their social circles. I appreciate your support and look forward to serving  as your Vice President of Activities and to another great year with SCSC.

VP Trips—Melinda Hughes

I’ve come a long way from having absolutely no desire for skiing to loving the sport every second I’m on the slope. My husband and I started skiing relatively late in life so we made a point to take lessons on every ski trip we took. That effort opened up the opportunity to ski withone of the nicest group of people in Texas.

It is an honor to be nominated as Space City Ski Club’s VP of Trips for a second year. I never imagined 20 years ago that I would be the VP of Trips for one of the premiere ski groups in Texas. Space City continues to have the most participants on each TSC trip as well as offering club trips to fill the void between those trips. With your suggestions, my goal is to have another incredible slate of trips for the2010-2011 ski season.

Please consider running a trip or helping out as this is your club. Without your volunteerism, we can’t have a trip slate. I am open to new ideas and welcome your opinions. Here’s to Space City and another year of “Counting Down To Lift Off’.

VP Membership—Pat A. Finch

Thanks to the Club for considering me again as a nominee for Vice President of Membership. As you know, I was VP of Membership for the 2009/2010 year. I am fully aware of the commitment to the Club to hold this office. I respect this position and office and pledge to bring my experience and knowledge to better serve the members of our Club. I have been a member of Space City Ski Club since 1988. I joined the Club to enjoy skiing with people who love the sport as much as I do. I have been on numerous trips, run numerous trips and I was a Director of Trips. I don’t hesitate to sign up for a trip because I always meet wonderful people and have a good time.

While VP of Membership, I will use my professional skills to recruit more fun loving people to our Club. We have a great group of people right now but we could always use more.

I will also be enlisting members to assist me at each meeting with membership duties. I want to thank the Club  members now for any assistance given during my term of office. Each one of us need to make a conscious effort to recruit new members. The Club can only survive if we all contribute. It takes a lot of effort from many people to keep the Club.

VP of Publication -- Leyla Ozkardesh

Thanks for the nomination of VP of Publications. My experience as Newsletter publisher in another organization as well as my computer experience helps me believe I can do a terrific job with publishing the SCSC monthly newsletter.

It has been a great experience being part of this club since joining in 2001. I’ve made wondrful friends and have enjoyed serving in prior offices and running several of our ski trips over these years.

Secretary—Ann Rogers

I have been a member of Space City Ski Club since 2000. I have enjoyed many wonderful ski trips over the years to various locations. The variety of trips to various locations is one of the things I have loved about the club. I now realize it is time to give back to the club for the benefits I have received over the years. It has been a pleasure to be the Trip Leader for the Breckenridge trip this year. I have enjoyed meeting new people in the club and helping them with their trip to Breckenridge. I am now ready to take the next step and be the Secretary for Space City Ski Club. I welcome the opportunity to participate in an Officer role for the club. I have good organizational skills and can manage multiple tasks. I have proven skills to manage a project and know that I can meet the requirements for this position. I want to volunteer my services to the club for the enjoyment I have received from the trips I have taken.

I work for Chevron in the Pipeline group as a Customer Service Representative. I am very aware of the importance of good customer service. I believe it is very important to satisfy the needs of the customer.

I know that I can help members of Space City Ski Club with any problems that may arise.

Treasurer — Betty Storms

I thank you for your nomination for Treasurer of SCSC, for a second year. It is my priority to appropriately manage the club\'s finances.

I have been a member of SCSC the last seven years, as skiing is my hobby, as well as opera, bridge, computers, and the arts. I have gone on 2 ski trips annually the last seventeen years.

Professionally, I am an RN, the last eleven years, in critical care, which is my passion. Prior to obtaining my RN, I started out in accounting.

I volunteered for the position of Treasurer of SCSC, as I believe in supporting the cause, in giving my time as able.

I have been blessed over the years, and have been given many opportunities; consequently, my life has been enriched tenfold-

Bidfest, Houston March 27-28th

Hey Space City, Chuck your TSC rep. I wanted to update you on the upcoming Bidfest. Reserve your rooms early for the great rate of $89 per night in the Uptown Square area, West Loop Marriott. On Friday March 26th two optional activities are also planned: a golf tournament at Cinco Ranch and a wine tasting being coordinated by yours truly. Golf starts around noon and the wine tasting at 2pm. See TSC website for more info, SCSC website soon.

To keep the costs down, Wine tasting only $25, I\'m looking for some volunteers to join the wine tasting and agree to drive several other delegates to/from the hotel (about a 7 mi round trip). We also will be looking for drivers for the golf outing. For those wanting to help but unable to attend either of these events, we also need volunteers to help with registration and also with the silent auction. Plan early and let’s get a lot of volunteers to make the first Houston  Bidfest, the best Bidfest. Chuck
